TENTH ANNUAL CARLISLE LECTURE SERIES
The Friends of the Carlisle COA and the Friends of
the Gleason Library invite you to attend a three part
lecture/discussion series to be held on Wednesdays, 1:30
p.m. at the Hollis Room at the Gleason Library.
Immigration law in the United States, past, present and
future has been a hot-button issue in the news and
political discourse. Navigating the legal labyrinth
involved with immigrating here is crucial to the
approximately two million people who come to the US each
year to live and work. This series of lectures aims at
providing an understanding of the politics and mechanics
of our immigration policy and law.

- SEPTEMBER 25 - Historical overview of US Immigration Law and Policy, from the 19th-century days of migrations driven by famine, revolution and gold, to the 20th century origins of a quota system.
- OCTOBER 2 - Navigating the labyrinth of the current immigration system.
- OCTOBER 9 - Proposed changes to US immigration law and its opposition, including both political and practical hurdles and the potential consequence.

American Musical Theater with Richard Travers
Broadway has been the epicenter for Musical Theater
for almost 100 years. This 3-part lecture series will give
an historical overview of the composers, performers and
dancers of American Musical Theater.

- OCTOBER 23 - An overview of the development of American Musical Theater including Minstrel Shows, Juke Box and contemporary musicals. Great composers (a partial list includes Gershwin, Kern, Porter, Rodgers, Lloyd-Webber etc) will be discussed as well as the famous librettists (Hart, Hammerstein, Schwartz, etc.).
- OCTOBER 30 - The Music of Stephen Sondheim: This lecture is all about the music and creative process of the multiple award-winning Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim; from his beginnings in the classic West Side Story through such ground breaking musicals as Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods and A Little Night Music.
- NOVEMBER 6 - The Pulitzer Prize Winning Musicals: Composers, songs and performers of the 8 musicals that have won the Pulitzer will be presented and discussed.

Regional Identities in American Art with Martin Fox
Thursday, January 30 at 7pm (snowdate February 13th).
As part of the "6th Annual Carlisle Reads": American
Nations by Colin Woodward, the Friends of the Carlisle COA
will be sponsoring Mr. Fox's presentation on the regional
differences in American Art during the 19th through mid 20th
centuries. Mr. Fox is a Professor of Art History at the New
Hampshire Institute of Art, author of many publications, and
an independent scholar. As a freelance editor and museum
professional, he has contributed to the creation of catalogs,
curriculum, and print materials for museums including New
Hampshire's Currier Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American
Art, Dia Art Foundation, the Museum of Modern Art, the
International Center of Photography, the Sterling and Francine
Clark Art Institute, and for publishers Harcourt, McGraw-Hill
and Yale University Press.

Art Matters with Jane Blair

They helped to cast a bright light on culture, and to rekindle a love of learning which encouraged science, new technology and a growing humanity. Join us for a look at their lives, their work, and a discussion of the Italian Renaissance.
- MARCH 12, 2014 - Leonardo Da Vinci: He was one of the greatest painters in the world, but paining was not what he did the best. He was a scientist, a chemist, a mathematician, an engineer, a designer of military equipment and strategist, a sculptor, a concert level musician, and an inventor. Join us for a look into all the works of Leonardo Da Vinci and the vision that was his genius.
- MARCH 19, 2014 - Pablo Picasso : Whether you swear by him or at him, Picasso was undeniably the most successful and influential artist of the 20th century. He was able to change his style, so quickly, so completely, that he seemed like many different artists. You can't like it all, he made over 50,000 works of art. However, there will be one era, one style, even a single painting, that will make you say; "I didn't know Picasso did that, I love that".
Jane Blair is an artist, art educator in many fine art
disciplines, and owner of ARTMatters, an art awareness program
serving schools, libraries and senior groups. She has BFA
from Boston University, a MFA from the University of Illinois
and is a PK-12 certified art educator.

- Wednesday, April 2, 2014 - Sleep Disorders with Neil Kruszkowski
The elements and "architecture" of a "normal" night's sleep will be discussed. What can go wrong with sleep and the overall health effects of disordered sleep as well as various common therapies will be examined. What changes in our sleep as we age and how sleep testing is done will also be covered.
Mr. Kruszkowski is Director of Cardiopulmonary/Neurology/Sleep Disorders for Emerson Hospital. He is a Registered Respiratory Therapist since 1979 and a credentialed Sleep Disorders Specialist.
- Wedsnesday, April 16 at 1:30 p.m. - Healthy Heart with Lincoln Pinsky, M.D.
Would you like to understand how to prevent a stroke or heart attack and know more about atrial fibrillation? If so, plan to attend an informational session with Dr. Pinsky to learn more about keeping your heart healthy, medications and other interventions used, and terms you may encounter. Dr. Pinsky will provide information and answer your questions.
Dr. Pinsky is a Carlisle resident who is a Board Certified Physician with over 40 years of experience in Internal Medicine and Cardio Vascular Disease, most recently working in Lowell and at Lowell General Hospital. He attended Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and did his post-graduate studies at Boston City Hospital, New England Medical Center and University Hospital.
- Wednesday, April 30 at 7:00 p.m. - Dental Issues with Andrea Richman, DMD, PC
Dr. Richman will be discussing the important relationship between Oral Health and overall health. Learn how proper oral care changes over the years, and best to prevent problems. She will also discuss the various options for replacing missing teeth, and answer any other questions you might have.
Dr. Richman had been practicing General Dentistry in Carlisle for the past 33 years. She received her dental degree from Tufts University in 1978 and did a general practice residency at Boston City Hospital. She is Past President of the Massachusetts Dental Society.
